Is an Aesthetician School Really Needed?

  • by

Those interested in a career in medical aesthetics often ask us, “Do I need to go to an aesthetician school first?”

You don’t need to have gone to school for aestheticians or cosmetologists before enrolling in medical aesthetics programs, though we do train a lot of them. Indeed, in most states, the minimum educational need to enroll is the completion of high school or the equivalent.

People who are considering a laser course have also shared with us their consideration of aesthetician training first. While it’s ultimately your call, we do advise getting some laser training under your belt first. You can complete the program in as little as two weeks and then apply what you’ve learned about skincare to your studies as an aesthetician. There is no clear superiority between the two, and the treatments for both go hand in hand, but cosmetic lasers tend to be more expensive.

Money is obviously a factor when choosing a profession. Laser technicians usually make between $20 and $25 per hour plus a predetermined commission (often 10%-30%), though this fluctuates depending on the circumstances. You need to think about things like where your spa is, how much you charge for services, how busy you are, whether or not you upsell, whether or not you provide skincare products, and so on. Like any other profession, success depends on putting in lots of effort.

Being able to make a positive difference in people’s lives is one of the most compelling reasons to pursue a career as a laser specialist. It’s common for people to feel depressed when they’re unhappy with how their skin appears. Perhaps they act out in a destructive way because of their mental state. Laser specialists are trained to use cutting-edge laser equipment to help their clients achieve healthier, more radiant skin. It actually occurred before our eyes! When you like who you are, you have an abundance of self-assurance. YOU, the laser technician, have the ability to provide that for your customers.

In just two weeks, you may become laser-certified and enter the lucrative skincare sector. To that end, you may want to consider whether or not an aesthetician school is necessary for you to conduct the work you enjoy.
